Anjali Perin is a fantastic young British vocalist, pianist and composer specialising in jazz, funk and soul. She is gaining a lot of attention from players on the jazz scene for her expressive, soulful voice, captivating original material and great musicianship.
The Anjali Perin Quartet features the great talents of Liam Noble on piano, Amy Baldwin on double bass, Jim Hart on drums and Anjali on vocals. The Quartet’s debut album FIRST REFLECTION has been recently released on Jazzizit Records, and was launched at the Pizza Express, Dean Street Jazz Club on 6th February. The album covers Anjali’s arrangements of standards as well as her own songs, and two vocalese lyrics she wrote a few years ago to Miles Davis’ solo on ‘Autumn Leaves’ (as recorded with Cannonball Adderley), as well as Eddie Gomez’s solo on ‘You Must Believe in Spring’ (as recorded with Bill Evans and Eliot Zigmund).
Her appreciation of the jazz standards repertoire encompasses a real love of jazz harmony and improvisation. She uses her voice as an instrument, which should be equally capable of expressing itself through lyrics as well as enjoying a ‘blow’ over the changes.
Anjali studied on the prestigious postgraduate jazz course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama gaining her Masters in Jazz Performance and Composition in 2005 (with Commendation). Anjali's sound is powerful and her ability to communicate with an audience makes her a great live performer. She also weaves her own modern jazz songs into her repertoire and uses her love of other genres of music including Indian Carnatic music, Western Classical music, folksong and a solid attachment to funk and soul to influence her amazing sound.
