Following on from the British Jazz Award-winning Joyriding – which received the Best CD award in 2012 – this new CD from the Derek Nash Acoustic Quartet is set to be another hit!

You’ve Got to Dig It to Dig It, You Dig? Is rather a long and unconventional title for a CD but it came from a fantastic list of advice courtesy of legendary jazz pianist, Thelonius Monk.  Saxophonist, Steve Lacy, transcribed the list in 1960.  In the middle of many wonderful lines of unexpected and idiosyncratic phrases, one stood out – You’ve Got to Dig It to Dig It, You Dig?  This inspired a melody to fit the phrase and led Derek to compose the title track.  These and other wise words guided the feel of the whole album.  Hope you dig it too!

The album features six new and diverse compositions by Nash (from the plaintive Winter Solstice to the Mulligan/Baker styling of I’m Getting Temperamental Over You to the foot-tapping, boogaloo of the title track) two from bassist Geoff Gascoyne, an inspired arrangement of Secret Love by pianist David Newton and a beautiful reworking, by Nash, of Russell Ferrante’s Homecoming
